Early Construction Package Awarded for new health infrastructure on the Northside
Early construction and site preparation is underway for the new health centre, 60 bed long-term care home and laundry centre on the Northside.
Northern Contracting Limited, a locally owned and operated construction company in Sydney Mines, was awarded an early construction package that includes groundwork and site preparation for the new builds. The contract is valued at over $300,000.
Located at the Northside Business Park, the project includes:
- A new health centre to replace Northside General Hospital, with space for collaborative family care teams (doctors, nurse practitioners, social workers, dietitians, and other health professionals); space for an urgent care centre; ambulatory care clinics; physiotherapy and occupational therapy; expanded dialysis service; public health services; mental health and addictions; expanded endoscopy services; diagnostic imaging (x-ray and ultrasound), blood collection, and cardiac services; and more.
- Twelve new (sub-acute) short-stay beds will provide care for patients who need observation but not in an acute care setting. This includes patients with exacerbated COPD, post-surgery wound care requiring IV antibiotics, and blood transfusion.
- Taigh Solas, the current 22-bed licensed community long-term care unit, will be replaced with a new 60-bed (estimated) long-term care home.
- A new laundry centre, with modern equipment, will service CBRM hospitals and health centres.
The CBRM Health Care Redevelopment Project, also includes: building a new Cape Breton Cancer Centre, emergency department, critical care department, inpatient beds, surgical suites and maternal/newborn services unit at Cape Breton Regional Hospital; building a new school, modern health centre, long-term care home and new recreational facilities in New Waterford; and expanding the Glace Bay Hospital’s emergency department and surgical services.
