Community-Led Placemaking Program
ABOUT
The Town of New Glasgow is focusing their placemaking efforts on creating a space for people to gather, while also commemorating an important piece of community and Canadian history. This project will see Viola’s Way, named in honour of civil rights activist Viola Desmond, become a pedestrian-centred street to allow for community gathering and programming downtown. Along the street stands the Roseland Theatre, where Desmond was arrested in 1946 for sitting in the whites-only section, now decorated with public art honouring Desmond’s impact and legacy.
