Public Housing for Shannon Park

One hundred new public housing apartments will provide safe, affordable homes for more than 300 people in Shannon Park. The homes will be the first to get underway as part of a larger housing plan announced by the provincial and federal governments in December.

“These homes will be part of an exciting new community development, close to schools, childcare, other homes and recreation,” said Housing Minister John White. “Working with Canada Lands, we are acting quickly. Site work is already underway.”

These apartments were originally planned for Old Beaver Bank Road in Lower Sackville, but further investigation identified problems with that site that would add millions of dollars in unexpected development costs and significantly reduce the number of units.

Twenty-two new apartments are currently being built on Old Beaver Bank Road, near where the 100 apartments had originally been planned. The building will be ready for tenants in the spring of 2027.

The Province submitted a proposal to Build Canada Homes to include the 100 apartments as part of a larger community development plan that will bring 930 affordable homes to Shannon Park. Nova Scotia is one of the first provinces to reach an agreement with Build Canada Homes, attracting $120 million in federal funding to support this additional housing in Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM).

While addressing increased construction costs, moving the housing to Shannon Park also responds to community concerns. The Sackville NS Lions Club uses part of the originally proposed site for parking and storage, and that would have been lost if construction had proceeded.

Shannon Park is 15 kilometres from the original Lower Sackville site.
