Celebrating Cape Breton Skilled Tradespeople: Chad Cruz
“Every wall, every screw that I put in means something to me. I am so glad to be part of the team building this hospital, knowing that someday it will help so many people who need it most.”— Chad Cruz, registered Level 2 apprentice
Chad Cruz began his journey in construction in 2024, when he discovered the Enhanced Direct Entry Program, offered by the Nova Scotia Construction Sector Council. The program opened the door to a new career in the skilled trades. Through the guidance of the Local 1588 instructors, Chad gained not only essential technical knowledge but also the encouragement and support he needed to build confidence and grow in his new career.
As part of the program, Chad secured a work placement with Arsenault Bros. Co., who welcomed him to their team, supported his first steps toward a career in the trades, and have continued to employ him ever since.
Chad is currently working on the Cape Breton Regional Hospital’s Cancer Centre, a project that holds special meaning for him. As his first job site, the hospital has played an important role in his growth and development as a carpenter. Knowing that his work will contribute to a facility dedicated to providing essential care and support to people throughout the region make the experience even more rewarding.
Finding meaningful work close to home has also been an important part of Chad’s journey. For him, it is a win-win: the opportunity to build a rewarding career while contributing to a project that will make a lasting difference in his community.
Now a registered Level 2 apprentice, Chad recognizes that starting a new career and building a future in a new country can come with challenges. He is proud to be part of such an important project and grateful for the opportunity to put his skills to work in the community he now calls home.
