Historic Mine Remediation

Location

Halifax Regional Municipality, and Guysborough County.

About the Project

On behalf of the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources and Renewables, Build Nova Scotia is managing the remediation of historic mine sites on Crown lands including Montague Mines in Halifax Regional Municipality, and the Goldenville mine in Guysborough County.

Preliminary findings show that the sites don’t pose an immediate risk to the public, but still need to be managed. Initial conceptual closure plans were completed in summer 2019, and continued sampling and assessment has taken place.  Phase 1& 2 Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) were completed in 2022 and detailed remedial design work for the Montague site is expected for the fall of 2022.

Three additional historic mines have undergone Phase 1&2 ESAs in 2022.  They are Goldbrook Lake, Seal Harbour, and Mooseland.
